Understanding the Energy Body
and the Chakras We used to have a cat in our building named Chakra. She’s grey and white and cute as a button. And just about every time she crawled up on someone’s lap in my office and I tell told them her name, I get one of those really confused looks. You know the one. Now I’m an “alternative” healthcare provider so I figure if the people who are coming to see me are new to the chakras and the energy system of the body, others might be too. So what are chakras? Before I can tell you what a chakra is, you’ll need some overall understanding of the energy system of the body. It all starts with the understanding that the body is a big biological computer and, like other computers, it runs on electricity. This bio-computer takes in and processes millions of bits of energetic information in every moment of every day. It is this system that holds the soul to the body, manages the emotions of the body, and transports all of the electrical impulses that fuel the “mechanical” functions of the body. When this system of the body becomes blocked, the body becomes ill. For thousands of years, Eastern traditions have understood this and we in the West are finally catching on. The electrical system in the body runs along what are known in Chinese medicine as meridians. Meridians are the invisible electrical “wires” that run through the body. They work very much like the nervous system, only we can’t see it. All of the energy for the body moves via this system of meridians. And all of the meridians come together in what are essentially switching stations. These switching stations, otherwise known as chakras, are the power centers of your body. They are the areas of your body where information comes in, where information is stored, and where information leaves, and they are critical to understanding and managing your personal health. When a chakra becomes blocked or weakened or otherwise out-of-whack, the body becomes ill. So what is a chakra and how does it become blocked? The body has 7 main chakras that are located along the spinal column in the back of the body and each is thought to be approximately the size of an orange. Each center stores a different kind of information for the body and is responsible for the maintenance of different parts of the body. The first chakra is located at the base of the spine, near your tailbone, and it is your connection to society at large and houses all of your basic survival instincts. It is your connection with time, space, distance and mother earth. It is your center of grounding. Here are located your belief systems about what is “right” and “wrong” and how it is appropriate to behave in the world. The second chakra is located in the lower back near the sexual organs. It houses information about your one-on-one relationships with your friends, family, co-workers, and your spouse. This chakra also holds information on how you think and feel about your work, finances, control, and sexuality. This is also the center of creativity in the body. This is where babies are made, and where you give birth to your ideas. The third chakra is located in the solar plexus, in your gut. It’s the place in your body where you feel bad if you’ve done something you believe to be wrong as this is your center of honor, dignity, and integrity. It is also the center of instinct. When you feel something in your gut, you are getting an instinctual hit in the third chakra. It is the center for your self-esteem and it is the power center of the body. If you do not have enough self-esteem to manage the power needs of your body, you will become ill. The fourth chakra is located at the heart. This is the center of love, the center of emotions. It is the battery that keeps the body running. If you are filled with love and gratitude, the body will more likely stay young and healthy. If, however, you are filled with anger, contempt, stress or a need for revenge, the heart center often becomes compromised. The fifth chakra is located at the throat and it is the center of truth and will power. The throat is the area of the body that is related to judgment, particularly that which is spoken. If you are someone who is always clearing your throat or you feel something stuck in your throat, ask yourself, what am I judging? Or what is it that I am saying that I do not believe to be true? Once you figure that out, switch from condemnation and judgment to compassion and watch the symptoms disappear! The sixth chakra is located in the center of the forehead, directly between the eyes. It is often referred to as the third eye. This is the area of the mind. It is the area of the body that makes decisions and choices. This is the area of the body that is ultimately deciding what you will create in your world and so it is ultimately responsible for the creation of your health. Ask yourself, what do I choose to think about? And then look at the dis-ease in your body. Now ask yourself, is there a correlation? If I were to change the way I THINK, can I possibly change the way the body is reacting? I’m here to tell you that you can. The seventh chakra is located at the top of the head and it is your connection with the divine…your spirit…with your higher self…with God. This is the center of inspiration and truth. This is the experience of Now and is a reminder to live in the present moment at all times. It is a reminder to forgive and let go of the past and surrender the outcome of the imagined future. So, you ask, how does a chakra become blocked or weakened or out-of-whack? So here’s the kicker that you may not want to hear. You see the body doesn’t do anything without a reason and the body does not have a system by which to punish you. In fact, the body becomes sick to HELP you. When the body is expressing itself in pain it is doing 2 things: 1) It is in the process of healing or at least trying to heal, and 2) It is sending you signals that there is a problem and you must get to work to help it heal. You see the body is always reacting to what is going on inside of you. It is reacting to your thoughts, to your actions, to your belief systems, and to your choices. It is NEVER reacting by “accident” (there is no such thing) and you are never a victim of some random illness or happenstance. The world just doesn’t work that way and neither does the body. If you become “struck” by some terrible disease, ask yourself why you were open to receive that disease in the first place and what does the disease have to teach you. Once you are able to look at the underlying cause of the illness, you will truly be able to heal. So now that you have a basic understanding of the energy body and the chakras, when you become sick, relate the illness to the chakra. Is it your back that hurts? Hmm. That’s located near the second chakra. Ask yourself, am I worrying about money? Am I having an argument with my loved ones? Did I have a desire to do something creative and then decide not to do it out of fear? If it’s a headache, ask yourself, “Am I thinking about or making choices about something that does not serve my highest good?” Once you learn how to diagnose yourself in this way, you can soon begin to make conscious decisions that can clear away the energetic blockages and allow your body to heal. Or, if all else fails, at least you’ll understand what your energetic healthcare doctor is doing when they “clear the chakras.” ©2004 |
